I surprised Hayden by letting her get her ears pierced for her 6th birthday. She was so excited that she wasn't even nervous. She chose little pink flower studs with a white center. She said that she didn't feel anything, and I believe her because she didn't make a peep. They're adorable, and they look so cute on her! I was so proud of how brave she was. Then she told me that the girl at Claire's was "so nice and kind and sweet."
Sidenote: We tried and tried to talk "big sister" Kirstyn into getting her ears pierced too, but we couldn't do it. (She said she didn't even want to come with us at first, but changed her mind just as we were leaving.) She even watched Hayden get hers done, and not even flinch. Still no luck. I know she really wants earrings, but I guess she's just not ready yet. I said, "Hayden said that she didn't feel anything." She told me that she's afraid that "it will still hurt for me." I don't know what else to do to reassure her, but I guess all I can do is wait her out.
Anyway, I knew Hayden was so ready to do this. She's been asking about it for months. And I knew it was the right thing to do to show her that I understand that she's a big girl now, and can make her own choices (on some matters, anyway).
But the clincher (for me) was when we were walking out of Claire's and on to the next store. I told her I was so proud of her, and how amazed I was that she wasn't even scared. Then I told her that her new earrings looked really cute on her, and she said, "I just feel pretty." That put a smile on my face, 'cause there's no bigger thrill to a mother's heart than making a sweet little girl feel pretty and special, especially on her birthday.(PS - she's not making a funny face - she's sucking on a lollipop they gave her.)

Yeah Hayden. They are cute! She must have ears of steel because I don't care what you do, it hurts. I was 16 when it was done and I still remember it hurting. And well, you've read about Natalie's escapade :-)Kirstyn will be ready soon enough.
Happy birthday, sweet Hayden!! Don't tell Kirstyn that cousin Ella was sooo excited to get her ears pierced and then cried pretty hard. I held her, paid the lady and then asked her to say "thank you" (like all good moms do)---she stared at me with a look of "no way--why on earth would I THANK her for hurting me!!
ps..Ella picked those same pretty pink flowers for her first earrings a couple of years ago even! you girls have the same great fashion sense!
Happy birthday and congratulation on the ears getting pierced! They look absolutely adorable.
She's adorable! Her little ears look red. I remember that. :/
I don't know what you can do to reassure your older daughter either. I had my ears pierced when I was 10 (23 years ago), and I remember that it HURT. Apparently, I have "thick" earlobes, and they had to "shoot" both ears twice to get the job done.
By the way, my ears have NEVER managed to stay completely infection-free. I rarely wear earrings, and when I put a pair back in I ALWAYS have to do some minor "surgery" to get the earring to go in.
Hopefully, that wasn't TMI. :)
Anyway, congrats to your daughter on her new look.
Oh congratulations and birthday wishes to your daughter!
I have a friend who just gave advice to another friend - go somewhere that does a lot of ear piercings so they don't "tug" on the ear resulting in a lopsided hole (like my own). ;)
Another tip, ask your pediatrician for EMLA cream if they will let you have it to get the ears pierced - it's a numbing cream that is used before shots sometimes. Perhaps that will help your older daughter?
I remember it hurting a little, like a big pinch.
